Sense has a great opportunity for passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as a Children’s Community Support Worker / Communicator Guide in the North Staffordshire area. This is a permanent role, your working hours/shift pattern will be dependent on your availability/suitability and that of the family/families you match.

We work with many families with varied requirements across the whole of North Staffordshire. You will be assessed and matched with a suitable family or families depending on your suitability/availability.

For example, you may be matched with 'family 1' and work 2hrs per week after school or 'family 2' - 3hrs in the day time, 'Family 3' - 4hrs at the weekend. You may be able to support more than one family we will work with you and the family/families to get the best match/outcome.

We are supporting families in:

  • Stone
  • Newcastle-Under-Lyme
  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Stafford and the surrounding areas

 

About the role…

  • In this role, successful candidates will be providing bespoke support to people who have congenital or acquired dual-sensory loss, or Deafblindness.
  • A Community Support Worker / Communicator Guide supports people to access their wider communities, providing sensory support to ensure that people with dual-sensory loss can be as independent as possible. Some of things you may be supporting Deafblind people with include:
  • Safe use of local public transport
  • Shopping
  • Attending appointments
  • Visiting places of interest or leisure facilities
  • Participating in social activities, joining social groups, or maintaining contacts with friends
  • Maintaining their hobbies

In this role, you may also provide communication support to people in their home, including supporting with reading and responding to their post or making telephone calls.

The communication needs of the people we support can vary from verbal speech, to British Sign Language and Deafblind manual, and some of the people we support read Braille. Some may require your skills as a Sighted Guide, while some have Guide Dogs to support their mobility in the community. Many people also use assistive technology to support their independence in and outside their homes.

Key skills and experience

Previous formal care experience is not required for this role. It is really important that you’re adaptable and able to work on your own initiative, always putting the people we support first. We are looking for people that really embrace our values and ‘I’ statements.

Essential - The ability to communicate in British Sign Language, hands on signing or similar methods is essential.

Desirable - Previous experiencing supporting individuals with sensory loss or additional communication needs, or an interest to learn this. A valid UK driving licence with access to your own vehicle .
